What does it take to join?
An active member of the DHS swim team will: pass all classes, have a physical on file with the trainer, attend tryouts, attend all practices and meets, show great character in and out of the pool, and have a strong work ethic.
Who do we compete against?
The DHS swim team is in the Region 6, District 24 group. The team will compete against other area school districts, including but not limited to: Texas City, Alvin, Clear Creek, Angleton.
When does the season start and end?
The swim season starts after tryouts and will continue to the end of February, culminating with the States meet. Swim meets will be during the week, with a few taking place on the weekends. There will be 8 scheduled meets, followed by district, regional, and state meets.
How many swimmers are on the team?
The swim team consists of all grade level swimmers. Swimmers must tryout and make the required times. Swimmers must also exhibit adequate stroke, turn, and start knowledge in order to make the team. Swimmer eligibility will be determined by the coaching staff.
Once my student makes the team, what should they expect?
A DHS swimmer will present themselves at all times with respect for their teachers, adults, and coaches. They will be a role model to their peers in and out of the classroom, support their fellow swimmers in any capacity, and exude team spirit. A DHS swimmer must always remember that they are a student first and will be disciplined in their academics. Swim practice, including dry land, will be 5 days a week, except on scheduled UIL meet days, or school holidays.
When are practices? Location?
Practices are held after school. Practices will be held at the Dickinson pool during warmer weather, and the Texas City natatorium during colder weather.
Will transportation be provided?
A DISD school bus will transport teams to all practices and UIL swim meets.
As a parent what will be needed from me?
Parents must ensure that their son or daughter is putting their role as a student first. Students who are failing any class will be put on academic leave from the team. Parents must also ensure that their student is an active member on the swim team by participating in all practices and meets. Parents are a student-athlete's biggest cheerleader and a team's biggest supporter. Please be an active member by staying up to date with communication and participating in fundraising events!
Are all activities, games/tournaments, and practices mandatory?
Swimming is a very demanding sport physically. In order to see progress in the pool and to drop times, effort must be put forth every day. If a swimmer is not participating in practice, they will not be placed into an event during a meet. Any additional activities, unless otherwise mentioned from the coaching staff, are not mandatory.
What are some ways to be involved?
Attend and support our meets, volunteer to host different events for the team, volunteer to assist with events during the season, purchase items from our fundraising events, assist with fundraising events, and positively promote and market the swim team every chance you have.
How can I get in touch with coaching staff?
