What is AVID?

At Dickinson High School AVID is an elective course for eligible students. Students may start the AVID program as early as 8th grade continuing through graduation. Dickinson High School implements AVID strategies  school wide  to increase student achievement and college readiness .
AVID Center Mission
AVID Center’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

AVID Elective  (grades 7-12)
Year-long elective class available within the regular academic school day on secondary sites that adheres to the 11 Essentials concerning implementation integrity and fidelity to the program. Interested students may contact the campus AVID teacher.

AVID Excel Elective (grades 7-8)
A NEW elective opportunity for AVID campuses targets long-term English learners through acceleration of language acquisition, development of literacy, and placing AVID Excel Scholars on the path to high school and college preparatory coursework.  The mainstay of AVID Excel is the Elective class which is designed to prepare middle school Els to enter AVID Elective course in high school.

AVID School wide
AVID is school wide when a strong AVID program transforms the systems, leadership, instruction and culture of a school ensuring college-readiness for all students. Teachers representing all curriculum departments are AVID trained—by attending AVID Summer Institutes or during in-district AVID Professional Development. AVID methodologies are incorporated into the content levels and classroom expectations across all curricular departments resulting in a consistent school wide college-going culture.
