Dickinson ISD – Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE)

Over the past several years, Dickinson ISD has worked hard to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars while continuing to provide high-quality education for every Gator. However, rising costs for essentials such as teacher and staff salaries, utilities, transportation, insurance, and instructional resources—combined with state-mandated requirements—have created significant pressure on our budget.

Why is Dickinson ISD Calling a VATRE?

The basic allotment (the amount the state provides per student) was raised by only $55 during the 89th legislative session, bringing it to $6,215 per student. This increase is far below what is needed to match the purchasing power lost since 2019—about 21.8% due to inflation—which equals a gap of $1,340 per student.

To address these funding challenges and continue providing excellent education and opportunities for our students, the Dickinson ISD Board of Trustees has called for a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE) this November.

What Does the VATRE Mean for Taxpayers?

We are asking voters to consider a 4-cent tax rate increase through the VATRE. If approved, this would generate approximately $7.3 million annually for Dickinson ISD.

- Average homeowner ($200,000 value): Increase of $2.00/month or $24.00/year
- Average homeowner ($300,000 value): Increase of $5.33/month or $64.00/year
- Average homeowner ($400,000 value): Increase of $8.67/month or $104.00/year

How Could Dickinson ISD Use the Additional Funds?

- Teacher and Staff Compensation – Competitive salary increases to recruit and retain the best educators and staff.
- Safety and Security Enhancements – Continued investment in secure campuses and safety measures.
- Technology Upgrades – Modern tools and resources to enhance teaching and learning.
- Facility Improvements – Updates and repairs to aging buildings to ensure safe, functional, and welcoming environments.
- Instructional Resources & CTE Programs – Expanded curriculum, materials, and programs, including Career & Technical Education pathways to prepare students for high-demand careers.

How Will This Affect Senior Citizens and Disabled Residents?

Homeowners in Dickinson ISD who are 65 or older or disabled will not see an increase in their school district taxes if the VATRE is approved, provided they have filed for and received the Over-65 or Disabled Persons Homestead Exemption through the Galveston Central Appraisal District.

The Bottom Line

The VATRE is more than a tax rate election - it is a promise to our children, our educators, and our community's future. Every dollar is an investment in brighter classrooms, safer schools, and life-changing opportunities for every Gator. For just a few dollars a month, we can ensure that Dickinson ISD not only keeps pace with growth, but thrives - equipping our students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to chase their dreams. This is our change to shape a legacy that will echo for generations.
