As communities across the globe come together to celebrate Earth Day, Dickinson Independent School District (DISD) is proud to recognize its ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and energy conservation. Over the past 14 years, the district has reduced energy consumption by 33%, resulting in more than $12.5 million in energy cost savings.
The district’s success is a result of its comprehensive, behavior-based energy conservation program, which emphasizes sustainable practices across all buildings and campuses. With utilities representing one of the top five expenses in the district’s budget—and prices for electricity, natural gas, and water on the rise—DISD’s proactive energy management strategy has not only saved taxpayer dollars, but also helped preserve jobs and important educational programs.
“While we often focus on energy conservation as a way to reduce costs, Earth Day reminds us that we are also preserving valuable natural resources,” said Jeff Pulkinen, Director of Energy Management. “Being responsible stewards of both our finances and our environment is something the entire Dickinson ISD community can take pride in.”
To continue its efforts, Dickinson ISD is encouraging students, staff, families, and the community to take part in Earth Day by learning more about ways to conserve energy at home and work. A variety of online resources are available to help individuals get started with simple, effective steps to reduce their energy use and environmental footprint.
With an average of $1 million in annual energy savings, Dickinson ISD remains committed to making a lasting impact—both fiscally and environmentally—for generations to come.
