Dickinson ISD Extends Suspension of Normal District Operations for Remainder of School Year
04/17/2020

Dear Parents,

I am writing to share plans for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.  Today, Governor Greg Abbott announced that schools in Texas will not return to face-to-face classroom instruction this year.  Our buildings will remain closed, and the processes and procedures we have been using for lesson planning, lesson delivery, and assignments will continue until the 2019-2020 school year ends on May 21st.  While we recognize this method for instruction is not perfect, it will allow us to remain focused on student learning and support for the next five weeks and complete the school year.

Beginning Monday, April 20, the DISD Food and Nutrition Department will be transitioning to providing meals three days each week.  This move will help limit the exposure of our FNS staff as much as possible while still providing nutritious meals to our students.  Meals will be provided for five days with the following schedule:

Monday – 1 breakfast meal and 1 hot lunch meal

Tuesday – 2 breakfast meals and 1 hot lunch meal and 1 cold lunch meal

Thursday – 2 breakfast meals and 1 hot lunch meal and 1 cold lunch meal

The meal distribution will still take place from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Dickinson High School (Owens Drive side) for all DISD students.  In order to receive the meals, students must be present in the car or the parent must provide a valid student identification for each child.

On May 21st at 7:30 p.m., we will provide a virtual graduation event to confirm the Class of 2020 as Dickinson High School graduates.  The stadium lights will shine brightly throughout the evening on May 21st in honor of our graduates.  A traditional graduation ceremony is being planned for this extraordinary group of seniors in July at an indoor venue that will accommodate more than 6,000 people.  Details about DHS graduation will be announced in the very near future.

I know you probably have many questions about end-of-year procedures, summer activities, and starting school in August.  I want to assure you that we will keep you well-informed as we work through the remaining weeks of the school year and prepare for a new school year to begin.  I truly understand how challenging the COVID-19 pandemic is for our families and staff.  I am very appreciative of the work you are doing at home to engage your children in learning, and I appreciate the tremendous support you are providing to our teachers and staff.  In Dickinson ISD, we love and care about our students and staff, and I promise, we will get through this challenge together.
